Carbon Free NY Coalition Applauds DPS Recommendation to Extend Zero-Emission Credit (ZEC) Program
ALBANY, NY — The Carbon Free NY Coalition, a coalition of business, labor, and economic development organizations that support the continued operation of New York’s three nuclear power plants, today issued the following statement in response to the New York State Department of Public Service’s (DPS) whitepaper recommending the continuation of the Zero-Emission Credit (ZEC) program:
“We are pleased to see the Department of Public Service recognize the critical role that the ZEC program plays in New York. The recommendation to continue this program affirms the essential contributions of New York’s existing nuclear fleet, which provides nearly half of the state’s zero-emission electricity while delivering reliable, around-the-clock power.
For nearly a decade, the ZEC program has been a pillar of New York’s clean energy strategy, ensuring grid stability, preserving union jobs, and preventing millions of tons of carbon emissions. This whitepaper rightly acknowledges that allowing the program to lapse would risk the premature retirement of these vital facilities, increased reliance on fossil fuels, and setbacks to our progress to meeting the Climate Act goals. Our coalition remains committed to working with state policymakers to ensure New York continues a path toward a clean, reliable, and equitable energy future.”
